Medicare Advantage

What to know

Medicare Advantage Plans, known as Medicare Part C offer coverage through private insurance companies that are approved by Center for Medicare Services (CMS). These plans combine the benefits of Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and often include additional coverage such as prescription drugs (Part D), dental, vision, and wellness programs. There are multiple different types of Medicare Advantage plans- some with special qualifications. This is where a licensed agent can help sort out the complexities.

Navigating these healthcare options can be overwhelming, but understanding the benefits and differences of Medicare Advantage plans is crucial for making the right decision for your health and budget.

Medicare Advantage Coverage

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A & B) that’s offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide all your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage—and most include extra benefits too.

What Does Medicare Advantage Cover?

Every Medicare Advantage plan must cover at least the same services as Original Medicare, including:
  • Hospital care (Part A)
Inpatient stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.

  • Medical care (Part B)
Doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, lab tests, X-rays, and durable medical equipment.

  • Most plans include Part D (Prescription Drugs)
So you typically won’t need a separate drug plan.

  • Wellness programs and gym memberships (like SilverSneakers®)

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) allowances

  • Transportation to medical appointments

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): Must use in-network doctors except for emergencies.

  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): Can see out-of-network doctors but at a higher cost.

  • SNP (Special Needs Plan): Tailored for specific health conditions or situations.

  • PFFS (Private Fee-for-Service): Flexibility in choosing providers who accept the plan’s terms.
